Okland was contracted to build the Student Athlete Center and Indoor Practice Facility for Brigham Young University.  Although the owner viewed the two buildings as one project, Okland developed detailed budget on the two buildings in which a book and chapter estimate was created. Okland used this system to compare the budget with the actual bid amounts in a line-by-line column comparison for each bid package as compared to the original budget.

During the preparation of the preliminary budget, the mechanical pricing was coming in over budget.  Okland worked with mechanical consultant to re-design and price various systems, resulting in a $400,000 savings by deleting six air handler units, twelve relief fans and simplifying the mechanical system.

Upon completion of bidding, the BYU Student Athlete Center and the Indoor Practice Facility’s project-contracted amount was within $6,000 of the budgeted amount for a $21,500,000 project.  In addition, during the course of construction, Okland was able to save the owner money and returned additional savings to the owner upon completion of construction.
