The Palmyra New York Temple, although one of a new generation of smaller temples to be completed by the LDS Church, has religious and historic significance due to its proximity to sites where the LDS faith was first established and organized. The building is located on a five acre site and contains 10,700 square feet and has a classic modern, single-spire design with the gold-leaf, Angel Moroni statue installed atop the 30-foot, stone-faced tower. The exterior is Bethel White granite from Vermont and the surrounding landscaping is brightly, yet subtly, illuminated by a lighting system. The building, site and parking areas are beautifully landscaped with native plants. The lobby contains similar interior highlights that a found throughout similar “small” temples: architectural Cherry woodwork, marble, high-quality carpets and furniture, and works of art (statues and paintings). One of the many unique features of this building is the 27 stained glass window systems on doors, skylights, interior panels and exterior windows. One of the main pieces is of the First Vision, and the overall tree motif (that required the hand cutting and hand notching of the more than 6,800 leaves) gives patrons a feeling like they are in the Sacred Grove. Since the glass for the windows in the Temple needs to be “obscure”, the surface of the glass in some areas either needed to be etched or specially prepared by being glazed and or fired multiple times. Ultimately there are over 17,000 individual pieces of glass ranging in size from a foot down to almost ½ an inch. The building also features administrative offices, lobby/entry area, administrative offices, patron service areas, a baptistery, dressing rooms, two ordinance rooms, two sealing rooms and an elegantly constructed “celestial room”.
